As negative a team selection as it gets

Vela added to bolster the 3 defensive midfielders, and an extra centre half added to Saturday's team

Alnwick
Grounds, Beevers, Wheater, Hobbs, Olkowski
Vela, O'Neil, Lowe, Williams
Magennis

subs Matthews, Little. OZtumer, Donaldson, Noone,Wilson, Wildschut

Doidge not involved

They will hopefully find us difficult to break down Cool

Disappointed...first game I've had off, worked 2 home games and had to spend my whole time there with my back to it... and that first half...fuck me...I should have done overtime...one was thinking.

Then the second half...well, this is much better I thought.

Alas... in the dying seconds... comes The bloke whose name is a nightmare for dyslexia sufferers ... springs up with the sucker punch.

Oh well... could be worse.

We are in shit state as a club at the min, things can only get better.

Although very negative the gameplan was working first half, Boro were reduced to potshots until that moment of madness from O’neill changed everything.

So we had to come out second half, and did. Williams and Vela got up to run beyond the ball (which barely happened first half) and both full backs pushed on. Unfortunately we didn’t create enough, even after Oztumer and Wilschutt got on. And the Asombalonga goal was another shambles.

Personally I think we’re a big improvement on last year, tonight was always going to be tough - but we now really need a result against Ipswich. Nothing to fear there IMO.

We went there with absolutely no intent of giving them a game.....no interest in even having a shot.

They were nothing to shout about we could have had a point with some gumption. It's not the players fault...….I was 50/50 with Parky.....that's enough now. Parky Out.

Report: Middlesbrough 2- Bolton Wanderers

The Whites were defeated against Middlesbrough 1-0 on Wednesday evening, with George Saville's goal being the difference maker at Riverside Stadium.

Team News

Three changes for Phil Parkinson’s side from Saturday against Queens Park Rangers.

Sammy Ameobi and Christian Doidge were replaced by Josh Vela and Josh Magennis, with Jack Hobbs replacing Craig Noone.

First Half

Twenty minutes into the game and Boro had shouts for a penalty, with a Jonny Howson through ball finding Jordan Hugill.

The local lad went down in the area, but referee David Coote waved protests from the home side.

George Friend got the better of Joe Williams down the left shortly after that, but his cross was blocked well by skipper David Wheater.

Boro’s Howson went for goal himself on the 25 minute mark, with a driven effort from distance never troubling Ben Alnwick.

Jack Hobbs was forced off just after the half hour mark with a head injury, replaced by Marc Wilson at the back.

Boro took the lead soon after, as a Gary O’Neil pass deflected off Mark Beevers into the path of George Saville, who curled the ball into the back of the Wanderers’ net.

Ryan Shotton nearly doubled the deficit for the Whites minutes later, but his narrow effort was saved well by Alnwick at his near post.

Tony Pulis’ side were banging down the Wanderers’ door with five minutes to go in the first half, with a Martin Braithwaite strike flying inches over the crossbar.

Second Half

As the second phase began, Boro picked up from where they left off as an Adam Clayton half volley went narrowly wide of the mark three minutes into the restart.

Former Boro left back Jonathan Grounds nearly had Wanderers back into the game, when a Pawel Olkowski darting run on the opposing flank caused the ball to fall to Grounds.

From the edge of the area, the full-back’s curved shot was just off target.

Just under an hour gone Olkowski was causing problems down the right hand side for Bolton, producing a floated cross into the area for Josh Magennis to an overhead kick on goal.

However, the Northern Irishman’s acrobatics came to no avail.

The home side had the ball in the back of the net on the hour, with George Friend darting the ball across goal, hitting the post with Aden Flint following up to tap it in.

But, Flint was adjudged to be offside and the goal was ruled out.

Bolton put together a lovely flowing move down the left flank with twenty minutes to go, as Willliams and Grounds linking up, to provide a cross-field pass to Magennis, whose shot was blocked by George Saville.

Ten minutes left on the clock and second half substitute Britt Assombalonga nearly made it two, as the ball fell to him from eight yards, before a David Wheater last ditch block stopped the striker from scoring.

From the resulting corner, Aden Flint rose highest of them all, powering down a header which just missed the far post.

As the match headed into added time, Wanderers had the lion share of the possession in that period, but were caught on the break as Britt Assombalonga was allowed to be through one-on-one with Ben Alnwick.

The striker made no mistake, as he calmly placed the ball low to the right to seal all three points for Middlesbrough.

Full time

Wanderers XI: Alnwick, Lowe, Beevers, Vela (Oztumer 65), Hobbs (Wilson 32), Olkowski, O’Neil, Williams, Magennis, Grounds (Wildschut 78), Wheater (C)

Unused substitutes: Williams, Little, Donaldson, Noone

Very disappointing, 2 bits of comical defending cost us, the annoying thing is we were coping with them quite well in the first half without creating anything ourselves. Once that first goal went in it was curtains as our line up was so defensive.
Credit they did try to push forward second half which makes me wonder why we can't try to start like that as well. Another bit of comical defending cost us the second goal.

I had the dubious pleasure of watching the first half in the pub with a Boro fan and after they scored the first he was whingeing that Pulis was likely to shut up shop and try to defend their lead there and then.
I had this image of two teams failing to cross the halfway line.

Have to say the goals were poor, but surely Parky must have expected Boro to score at some stage so where were the attacking options?

Feel sorry for Josh Magennis after another massive shift of chasing lost causes - he must be wondering what he signed up for. Doidge not even making the bench was definitely and eggs in one basket job.

Magennis must be wondering what he signed for?! He’s in the goal scoring form of his life and playing at the highest level he’s ever managed, it’s been a brilliant move for him.

This is why we will never improve under Parky. I agree with Martin in that this was the most negative team I have ever seen a Bolton manager pick.

What bugs me is we're total shite at defending, so why the manager thinks we can contain any team for 90 minutes beggars belief.

None of this is his fault, but if you're going to put 10 men behind the ball you have to have someone with pace up top in the (slim) hope of a break away goal.

Punting the ball to any lone striker and expecting him to out-muscle 5 defenders is just plan stupid.
